The girls team earned a close meet win (70-66) and several members of both squads turned in personal bests as the Canton High outdoor track teams opened the season last Tuesday at home against Milford.

Head coach Anna Amico cited the performances of Julia Guerini and Margaret Polsgrove, who stepped up and ran the two-mile at the last minute in place of an injured teammate. “The second and third place finishes by those two carried us to a win,” Amico said. “Those four points earned were the difference between a tie and a win.”

Selena Cho and Sam Koplik both had multiple victories for the Bulldogs, with Cho winning the 100m and 200m and Koplik taking first in the 400m hurdles (PR 67 seconds) and 100m hurdles. Cho also placed second in both the triple jump and long jump.

Other point scorers for the girls included Andrea McNeil (1st) and Maggie Dunn (3rd) in the 800m; Hannah Jankowski (1st) and Tamarra Auguste (2nd) in the high jump; Jen Dever (2nd) in the 400 hurdles; Kelly Dever (2nd) in the javelin and discus; Claire Belisle (3rd) in the 100 hurdles; and Alana Murphy (3rd) in the shot put. Auguste also placed second in the 200m with a career-best time of 27.4 seconds.

On the boys side, the highlight of the meet was the 4×400 relay race — in particular the performance of senior captain Timmy Gutowski, who closed a roughly 50-meter gap and carried his team to the victory. “Timmy ran the best anchor leg I have ever seen in high school track,” said Amico.

Senior captain Liam Collins cruised to a win in the mile, while co-captains Gutowski and Andrew Moy took the top two spots in the 800m. Pat Hession won the 400m hurdles, Mark Clancy won the two-mile (PR 10:24), and Sean Mitchell tied for first in the high jump.

Also placing in the top three were John Guenthner in the 400 hurdles, Woanyen Mahn (2nd) and Kenny Ofonagoro (3rd) in the 200m; Mike Salvatori (2nd) in the javelin; Phil Pennacchio (3rd) in the shot put; and Kevin Wing (3rd) in the discus.

Both teams had about two weeks to practice for their next meet, scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, at Stoughton High.
