Reader challenges MAC on Nov. elections

By

Dear Editor:

Joe DeFelice once again has attacked last year’s town meeting vote that approved moving our April election to November. He continues to claim that this won’t increase voter turnout “except in a presidential year.” I’ve pointed out in previous letters to the Citizen and at last year’s town meeting that abundant historical voter data conclusively shows that even on off years, voter turnout in November is higher than in April. You need only compare the voting records of the 50 cities in Massachusetts that have elections on off years in November with the 300 towns in Massachusetts that have elections in the spring. On average, cities in Massachusetts have much higher turnout than Massachusetts towns.

What bothers me most about DeFelice’s statements is he knows they’re not true. One would think that after his embarrassing retraction concerning neighborhood support for the infamous roundabout only the week before, he would be more careful writing his next column.

Sincerely,

Bruce Rohr
