COA readies for move to new senior center

By

The wait for the new Canton Senior Center is finally coming to an end. After a series of delays, DPW crews and moving trucks will be helping the Council on Aging move to its new headquarters at 500 Pleasant Street — the site of the former Knights of Columbus building — on Wednesday, April 1.

The COA offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday, April 2 and 3. On those two days, the COA transportation program will remain operational, and income taxes will be prepared at the current site at the Canton Housing Authority building on April 3. The COA will reopen for business on Monday, April 6. Regular office hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A formal open house and dedication ceremony is being planned for early June.

In a related matter, 15 members of the COA came to Tuesday’s selectmen’s meeting to say goodbye to Selectman Sal Salvatori, who is stepping down after 11 years of service on the board. Salvatori had served as the liaison to the COA. His fellow selectmen remarked that he was one of the hardest working selectmen who gave tirelessly of himself behind the scenes.

Selectmen also praised Salvatori for his work in negotiating a potential development agreement with the owners of the Plymouth Rubber site. COA Director Diane Tynan said the council very much appreciated Salvatori’s efforts to assist the COA with its move and saluted Amy Salvatori, Sal’s wife, who often cooked dinner for as many as 100 seniors for various COA occasions.

Salvatori had a hard time expressing his appreciation to the crowd, who wished him well, but said he loved the town and its residents. He also stressed that he “will still be around” and will stay very much involved in the local Boys Scouts program. Selectmen presented a plaque to Salvatori thanking him for his service to the town.
