Search of stolen vehicle turns up drugs, loaded gun

Two Brockton men are facing an assortment of criminal charges — ranging from possession of a stolen vehicle to drug and gun charges — following a search and subsequent arrest at a Canton gas station last weekend.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, January 17, at the Shell station on Route 138. An on-duty Milton Police officer, who had stopped near the Blue Hills, observed a suspicious vehicle with two occupants in the parking lot. After determining that the vehicle had been stolen, the officer notified the Canton Police Department. Canton police officers arrived on scene along with members of the Milton PD and a Massachusetts state trooper.

The officers were able to approach the vehicle and safely detain the driver, later identified as Garvin Ducheine, 18, and the passenger, Dashawn Saunders, also 18. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded .22 caliber revolver that had been placed under the passenger’s seat. The firearm had five live rounds and one spent shell casing, indicating that it had been fired at least once at some point. Police also found six rounds of ammunition in the chest pocket of Saunders’ jacket.

Both men were arrested and transported to CPD headquarters, where Ducheine was also found to be in possession of four bags of marijuana that were “packaged in a manner consistent with street level distribution,” according to Canton Police.

Ducheine and Saunders were held on $15,000 bail and face an assortment of charges, including possession of stolen property, possession of narcotics with intent to distribute, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

In a statement issued to the media, the Canton Police Department commended the “professionalism and quick thinking of all of the officers involved,” including those from the Milton and Canton police departments and the Massachusetts State Police.

“[Saturday] morning’s arrest is yet another reminder of the dangers our officers face on a daily basis,” stated the news release. “Great job by all involved.”
