CHS field hockey team clinches Division 1 tourney berth

The CHS field hockey team is headed back to the Division 1 south sectional tournament after taking two out of three road games last week to improve to 9-4-2 overall. The Bulldogs’ lone loss came Wednesday against first-place Oliver Ames, although they quickly regrouped and went on to dominate Milford just two days later.

Although the final score against Milford was only 3-1, Canton was in complete control of the game from the “first whistle to the last,” according to head coach Fior Griffin. They scored all three goals off penalty corners — two by Colleen Phelan and one by Lindsey Nolte — and put up 34 shots on net. Freshman Andrea McNeil picked up an assist, and Taylor Carrington got the start in net for the Bulldogs and played the entire game.

“I thought they came out strong, they came out focused, and we executed our game plan,” said Griffin. “We had purposeful transfer balls, and we played great team defense from our forwards down to the backs.”

In Wednesday’s loss to the Tigers, Canton came out with the right amount of intensity but struggled to find the back of the net, falling 2-1. Caroline Hagan had the lone goal for the visitors — a pretty tip shot off a Mary McNeil pass that went up over the goalie’s head and just cleared the crossbar.

The Bulldogs were due to wrap up the regular season this week with three games in five days: Monday at Stoughton, Wednesday versus Sharon, and Friday at nonleague Westwood.
