Girls’ track beats Sharon for season’s 1st win

The CHS girls’ track team earned its first win of the season last week, beating Sharon 80-56 behind strong performances by Rachel Campagna, Catherine Song, Samantha Koplik, and Michaela Kelly.

Campagna, a senior, once again scored in all four of her events and is currently the team’s leading scorer. She placed first in the 400 with a state-qualifying time of 63.1 seconds, first in the long jump (15’5”), second in the 200 (28.5 sec.), and second in the triple jump (30’10”).

Song, a sophomore, won both the mile (5:45) and the two mile with a state-qualifying time of 12:25. Koplik, also a sophomore, won the 400-meter hurdles in 72.1 seconds and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.9 seconds.

Kelly, a senior, won the 800 with a time of 2:32 and anchored the 4×400 relay, which qualified for states with a time of 4:27.8. Other relay members included Hayley Mulford, Sarah MacQuarrie, and Jen Dever. Canton’s 4×100 relay also beat Sharon with a time of 52.9 seconds behind Masha Smirnova, MacQuarrie, Ellie Teague, and Selena Cho.

Other point scorers for Canton included Cho, 2nd, 100m, 13.3 seconds; Smirnova, 3rd, 100m, 13.6 seconds; MacQuarrie, 2nd, 800m, 2:39; Amanda Eagles, 2nd, mile, 5:48.1, and 3rd, two mile, 12:47.2; and Dever, 2nd, 400m hurdles, 73.9 seconds.

In the field events, junior Alana Murphy finished second in the shot put (25’9”) and third in the discus (63’), while sophomore Kelly Dever placed second in the discus (63’1”) and third in the javelin (60’). In the high jump, Hannah Jankowski placed second (4’6”) and Tamara Auguste placed third (4’4”). Canton also swept the long jump behind Campagna, Cho (15’), and Smirnova (14’5”).

On the boys’ side, the Bulldogs fell to the Eagles 105-27 despite a league-leading 100-meter time by senior Somto Ofonagoro.

Ofonagoro’s state-qualifying time of 11.1 seconds is the fastest in the Hockomock League thus far and currently the third fastest in the state. Ofonagoro also anchored the winning 4×400 relay team, which missed a state-qualifying time by two tenths of a second (3:41.2). Other relay members included Tim Gutowski, Matt Derbin, and Noah Healey.

Also scoring points for Canton were James Bourikas, 2nd, 200m, 24.8 seconds; Kenny Ofonagoro, 3rd, 200m, 24.9 seconds; Evantz Elisma, 2nd, 400m, 54.5 seconds; Woanyen Mahn, 3rd, 56.5 seconds; Liam Collins, 2nd, 800m, 2:07.9; Joe Clancy, 3rd, two mile, 10:59.6; and Mike Larson, 3rd, 110m hurdles, 20.6 seconds.

In the field events, Aaron Faber finished second in the shot put (33’11”) and Phil Pennachio placed third (33’1”), while Kevin Wing placed third in the discus (87’1”).

Both teams were due to face Oliver Ames on Tuesday, April 15.
