Former Canton hoops star soars at UMass Boston

Olivia Murphy, a former three-sport standout athlete at Canton High School, was recently named the Little East Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second straight week and the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Player of the Week for the first time in her career after averaging 30 points and 12 rebounds per game.

murphyMurphy led UMass Boston to a 2-0 week by putting together a pair of dominant performances.

The sophomore forward started the week by pouring in 33 points in a 79-41 win over Mount Ida College. Murphy tied a program record for points in a game and also set a new record with 15 made field goals. She added 12 rebounds in just 26 minutes of play.

On Saturday, December 7, Murphy led the Beacons to their program-record third straight win over Keene State College by registering a team-high 27 points and 12 rebounds.

For the week, she knocked down 61.9 percent (26-for-42) of her attempts from the field and added two steals and three blocks.

Murphy, the reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, currently leads the Little East in scoring (21.8 ppg), rebounding (12.2), and offensive rebounds per game (5.2).

UMass Boston (5-1) will travel to Westfield State on Thursday (today) before heading to Rhode Island College on Saturday, December 14. The team’s next home game is scheduled for Monday, December 30, against Husson University.
