Girls’ Co-MVP

Avery Devoe (Volleyball)

Avery DevoeA senior outside/middle hitter and team captain, Devoe wrapped up a stellar four-year career with one of the most dominant individual seasons in school history, earning Hockomock MVP and Division 2 All-State honors while leading her team to a 19-3 record and a second straight appearance in the central sectional finals. An outstanding all-around player, Devoe led the Bulldogs in kills (335), hitting percentage (.308), aces (50), and blocks (47.5) while posting an .890 serve percentage and a .669 dig percentage. “Avery’s work ethic is superb and her sense of team infectious,” said head coach Pat Cawley. “She has been key in keeping the culture of the volleyball team intact, constantly reaching out to the younger players, helping to make them better. She will truly be missed.”

Kellie Stigas (Field Hockey)

Kellie StigasStigas, much like her classmate Devoe, was among the very best in her sport in all of Massachusetts this season, earning league MVP honors and a selection to the Best of 60 Senior All-Star team. A team captain and consummate leader, Stigas was the Bulldogs’ top playmaker and leading scorer, finishing with 17 goals and 11 assists — all while battling an Achilles injury that she sustained early in the season. Head coach Fior Griffin described her as the heart and soul of the team and one of the most skilled and technically sound players that she has come across in her seven years at CHS. Stigas will continue her playing career next fall at Northeastern University.

Boys’ MVP

Sam Riemer (Golf)

riemerA senior captain and an All-Hockomock League selection, Riemer solidified his status as one of the region’s top high school golfers while leading his team to an overall record of 10-4. He shot a 74 and finished third overall at the Division 2 south sectionals, advancing to the state individual finals for the third consecutive year. He also finished fourth in the Hockomock League with a nine-hole scoring average of 39, and his score was used in 11 of the team’s 14 matches. “Sam is one of the leaders of our team and played well in all of our matches,” said head coach Mike Barucci. “He was one of the top golfers in the Hockomock League.”

Volleyball

Elizabeth Hamilton

Only a sophomore, Hamilton went from being strictly a defensive player to an all-around star at outside hitter, earning numerous accolades, including Mass. Volleyball Coaches’ Association All-State and Underclassman of the Year from Hockomocksports.com. Hamilton recorded 220 kills on the season and led the team in digs with 149. “She is a court leader with an impressive understanding of the game,” said head coach Pat Cawley. “She is an all-around threat, being the most consistent and skilled two-way player on the team.”

Erin Proctor

A junior, Proctor was the team’s starting setter and finished eighth in all of Division 2 with 457 assists. She also led the team in dig percentage (.690) and only had 27 ball-handling errors in 1,710 attempts while serving at a 94.2 percent clip. A Hockomock All-Star selection, Proctor was the Bulldogs’ best athlete and was equally important on offense and defense. “Arguably, the setter’s job is the most difficult, but Erin rose to the challenge and did it with poise and maturity,” said Coach Cawley.

Football

Matt Bagley

A senior captain and an All-Hockomock first team selection, Bagley was one of the Bulldogs’ most versatile players, splitting time between halfback, linebacker, and special teams while playing almost every down. On Thanksgiving Day, Bagley was chosen to wear No. 27 in honor of former Bulldog great Ricky Shannon, who died tragically in a house fire in 2008. “Matt is a special person who has left an indelible mark on the Canton High School community,” said head coach Dave Bohane. “As a coach, I will use his legacy to help future athletes overcome adversity and be actively involved in the community.”

Derrick Harris

This talented junior receiver-cornerback was an All-Hockomock honorable mention despite missing several games due to injury. Catching six touchdown passes, Harris showed the speed and quickness to get open and the ability to out-jump and out-muscle his opponents. “He’s a weapon, no doubt,” said Coach Bohane, who acknowledged he may change his offense next year to take better advantage of Harris’ talent. Harris also made significant strides as a cornerback and proved to be a weapon in the return game on kickoffs as well as punts.

Brian Hagan

A junior captain and the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback, Hagan was a two-way threat on offense and also excelled in the defensive secondary. He showed exceptional talent as a runner and a passer as well as a good understanding of the offense. He also played through injuries and once again led the team in interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. “What I like about Brian is his consistency and his calmness under pressure,” said Bohane. “He understands our offense and what we are trying to do.”

Frankie Powers

A senior captain, Powers was a hard-nosed, high-energy, two-way lineman — one whose attitude “represented the epitome of CHS football,” according to Coach Bohane. Initially hoping to play fullback, Powers embraced his new role for the good of the team and joined forces with junior Wavol Prentice to give the Bulldogs a formidable one-two punch on the defensive line. He also “walked the walk” in the weight room and really sold his teammates on the importance of strength and conditioning. “He is a very unselfish player and someone I admire,” said Bohane.

Girls’ Soccer

Kim McNally

An incredible talent and a fierce competitor, McNally was the Bulldogs’ go-to scorer and finished the season with a team-leading 15 goals, including a picture-perfect header in the team’s tournament game against Holliston. A senior captain and a vocal leader, she was very often the best player on the field and finished the season with numerous awards and honors, including an All-Eastern Mass. first team selection.

Hailee Duserick

A junior captain and a three-year varsity starter, Duserick continued her ascendency this season as one of the region’s premier soccer players, earning All-Hockomock and All-Eastern Mass. honors. Athletic and highly skilled, Duserick anchored the Bulldogs’ defense from the center back position, shutting down the other team’s best player on countless occasions. Overall, the team surrendered just 18 goals in 19 games while collecting eight shutouts — thanks in large part to Duserick’s stellar play in the back.

Rachel Campagna

A senior captain, Campagna was the team’s starting center midfielder and a key cog on both sides of the ball. While she did not produce gaudy statistics, she “brought a different level of gamesmanship to the team,” according to head coach Kate Howarth. “Rachel was fearless and relentless,” said Howarth. “She goes into every tackle with no reservation. She never let down and brought it every game.”

Lexi MacQuarrie

A senior midfielder, MacQuarrie was a steadying presence and the anchor of the entire team, according to Coach Howarth. “Lexi is one of the most calm and collected midfielders I’ve ever seen at this stage and at this level,” said Howarth. “We relied on her to bring the ball down and find her teammates. She has great field vision and sees things that other girls this age don’t normally see.”

Boys’ Soccer

Damian Kozak

Only a junior and already a two-time All-Hockomock League selection, Kozak was a team leader and raised his game to new heights this season, becoming just the fourth underclassman in program history to be named to the Eastern Mass. All-Star team. Throughout the season he was one of the Bulldogs’ most valuable and consistent performers, finishing with a team-best 12 points, including five goals and seven assists.

Sam Larson

A senior captain, Larson anchored one of the league’s stingiest defenses — a unit that surrendered 1.1 goals per game and collected eight shutouts. He also contributed offensively with two goals and two assists and was recognized as a Hockomock League All Star and a member of Hockomocksports.com’s Best 11 team. A three-sport standout athlete, Larson now embarks on the basketball season before transitioning to baseball in the spring.

Bart O’Brien

An All-Hockomock honorable mention, O’Brien enjoyed a breakout season in his junior campaign, finishing as the Bulldogs’ leading goal scorer and second in total points with nine. He seemed to get better as the season wore on and had several big games down the stretch, including a one-goal, one-assist performance against Foxboro that helped the team clinch its eighth consecutive postseason berth. He will serve as team captain next season alongside classmate Damian Kozak.

Field Hockey

Mary McNeil

A junior, McNeil split time between the center midfield and center forward positions and was a big part of the team’s attack, scoring goals and helping to generate scoring chances for her teammates. An All-Hockomock League selection, McNeil was also a factor defensively and was one of the best stick handlers on the team, according to head coach Fior Griffin.

Jackie Merrigan

A senior midfielder/forward, Merrigan wrapped up her field hockey career with another strong season, contributing both offensively and defensively and earning a spot on the Hockomock League All-Star team. A gifted athlete who also excels in lacrosse, Merrigan displayed a mix of intensity and skill and finished second on the team with five goals and three assists.

Alex Dillon

A senior, Dillon rotated with Merrigan in the right midfield/right forward positions and had an equally impressive season, earning All-Hockomock League honors. Dillon also finished in a tie with Merrigan with five goals — good for second on the team.

Casey Considine

A senior captain, Considine was the Bulldogs’ defensive anchor and one of the team’s most vocal leaders. She missed some time during the season due to a hand injury, but she was able to return and played a big role in several of the team’s victories. An instinctive and highly skilled player, Considine will continue her career at Division 1 Holy Cross next season.

Golf

Mike Breviglia

A junior, Breviglia enjoyed a breakout season in 2013, highlighted by his victory at the Hockomock Championships, where he shot a league-best 78 and was named tournament MVP. He was also named to the league all-star team and finished sixth in the league with a scoring average of 39.78. “Mike is a hard worker who put a lot of time and effort into his game, and it paid off immensely,” said head coach Mike Barucci. “I believe he will be one of the top golfers in the league next year.”

Girls’ Cross Country

Amanda Eagles

A senior captain, Eagles took the number-one runner’s role when teammate Catherine Song was injured. A strong runner who continued to improve, she nearly qualified for states, missing that honor by about 15 seconds. “Amanda will be missed through her hard work and leadership,” said head coach David Hiltz. “She individually had a great season and looks to continue on her success next year.”

Catherine Song

Known to her teammates as “Cat,” Song started the season as the team’s number-one runner, missed some time due to injury, and then came back to finish strong in the postseason. Only a sophomore, she finished 17th out of 157 runners at the division championships and made it all the way to states, where she finished 78th in a field of 180 runners. “She had a great year and I am happy she will be returning,” said Coach Hiltz.

Boys’ Cross Country

Courtland Priest

Only a sophomore, Priest was the number-one runner for the CHS boys’ team from start to finish. According to Coach Hiltz, he is one of the hardest workers on the team both during practice and in races. “He did a great job for us all season, whether in dual meets or at Hocks and divisionals,” said Hiltz. “We look to build our top five around him again next season.”
