Francis Edward Guiney, 87, of Canton, died Wednesday evening, October 23, 2013, at Norwood Hospital after a sudden illness.

GuineyHe was born in Boston, the son of the late Thomas J. and Mary Belle (Cameron) Guiney.

Mr. Guiney is a 1951 graduate of Bentley College of Accounting and Finance. He received a Bachelor in Business Administration from Northeastern University in 1956. Mr. Guiney continued his education by taking several courses in various phases of hospital administration.

From 1947 to 1952, Mr. Guiney served as an accountant for the Boston Retirement Board. From 1952 to 1958 he was the financial officer for the Boston City Hospital. From 1958 to 1965, he was the assistant administrator for Long Island Chronic Disease Hospital, City of Boston. He assumed the directorship of this facility from 1965 through 1968. From 1968 to 1969, Mr. Guiney served as the assistant deputy commissioner, assistant director, Boston City Hospital. From 1969 to 1971 he was assistant deputy commissioner, associate director of Boston City Hospital. From 1971 to 1972, he was the acting director for the Department of Health and Hospitals, City of Boston, and became its director from 1972 through 1976.

In 1977, Mr. Guiney became the assistant superintendent of administration at the Paul A. Dever State School in Taunton until his retirement in 1985.

Mr. Guiney had also served as an associate professor in community health medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine.

Throughout his long career, Mr. Guiney was affiliated with the following associations: the American Hospital Association, the Massachusetts Hospital Association, the Greater Boston Hospital Association, Board of Directors, Director of the City of Boston Credit Union, and a charter member of the Council of Boston Teaching Hospitals.

Mr. Guiney served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in Hawaii at the end of World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Josephine “Jo” (Sbraccia) Guiney, his children, Frances Guiney of Canton, Carol Piaseczny and her husband, Thomas, of Stoughton, Steven Guiney, Esq. and his wife, Mary, of Plymouth, and Kevin Guiney of Canton; his brother, William Guiney, and his sisters, Theresa Coleman, Madeline Scully, and Doris Leonard. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late Robert, John and Joseph Guiney and brother to the late Thomas, John, Edward, Leo, Robert and Paul Guiney, and Florence Dolan and Louise Lennon.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Resurrection at Saint Gerard Majella Church, 1860 Washington Street, Canton, on Saturday, November 23, at 10 a.m. Military honors will be bestowed at the conclusion of mass.
